How To Automatically Login To Windows, Without Typing Any Password

Tutorial by lonethoughts published on 03/01/2017
No matter whether you use Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, we will show you how to set up your operating system so that it will log you in automatically, without requesting that you type your user account password or PIN code every time. We will guide you through all the steps and share with you all the information you need to know, to make everything as quick and easy as possible. Let's get started:

How To Open The Hidden User Accounts Window

In order to do the settings required for you to be able to automatically login to Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, you will first need to open the so called "hidden" User Accounts window. To do that, there are several methods you can follow:
  • Open the Run window by pressing the Windows key + R or launch Command Prompt. In either one of these windows, type one of the following two commands: netplwiz.exe or control userpasswords2. Regardless of the command you choose to use, they have identical results and launch the same User Accounts window. This works in all versions of Windows. Windows, user accounts, automatically, login, log on, start
  • In Windows 8.1 you can type netplwiz.exe or control userpasswords2 directly on the Start screen and then click or tap the appropriate search result. Windows, user accounts, automatically, login, log on, start
  • If you're using Windows 10, you can use Cortana's search field to enter one of the commands - netplwiz.exe or control userpasswords2 - and then click or tap on the appropriate result. Windows, user accounts, automatically, login, log on, start
Once you run the command, a User Accounts window similar to the one below will launch.

There you will see the list of all the users registered on your computer or device.

How To Set A User To Log On Automatically

Start by selecting the user for whom you no longer want to type the password in order to log in to Windows. Then, uncheck the option which says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" and click or tap OK.
Windows, user accounts, automatically, login, log on, start
You will now be asked to type the password of that user twice, for confirmation. When done, click or tap OK.
Windows, user accounts, automatically, login, log on, start
The next time you will start Windows, you will be automatically logged on with the user you just selected. No matter whether you're using Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, this user will become the default log on user.

Important Security Implications

If you have multiple users defined on your computer or device, setting this up might be an inconvenience. Windows will always log in automatically to the user which you selected during this procedure. In order to log in to another user, you need to wait for Window to start up and log in automatically, sign out and then select the other user you want to log on to. If you want to set things back to the way they were, follow the same procedure and make sure you check the option which says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".
If your Windows computer or device is part of a network domain, such as a corporate network, this procedure will not work. In network domains, the policies regarding the log on procedure are set by the network administrator and cannot be overwritten by users. If you try this on your work PC, it is very likely not to work.

Conclusion

This trick will work well on your home computer, which is used mostly by you or people you trust. But, if you have a laptop or tablet you take with you everywhere, it is best to trade in convenience for security and not use this trick. If it gets stolen, it is best for you if they are not able to log in automatically.
